Agri-Fab 45-0492 Lawn Sweeper, 44-Inch

This particular lawn sweep isn’t actually a hand sweeper, so comparing it to the others is going to be quite difficult, so bear with me.

I need to say, first, that if you have the machinery there to operate an automatic sweeper, this is what you should be doing straight out. Granted, it costs more money and is less than ideal for small patches of land, but the performance difference is staggering.

This particular model is the Agri-Fab tow behind sweeper. In case that didn’t register, that means it needs to be attached to a vehicle in order to be used. Now, you’re not going to go driving the family sedan around in the garden. No, this is designed for electric lawnmowers. If you don’t have one, there those miniature tractor looking things you often see in the movies and on TV.

The sweeper has a 44-inch sweeping width. Yeah, now you should see why this is a towed unit, and not a hand one. It also works wonders at collecting twigs and other large nuisances.

Agri-Fab 45-0492 Tow Lawn Sweeper
Agri-Fab 45-0492 is the best lawn sweeper tow behind

It has a 25 cubic foot capacity, which is a mind-boggling 187 gallons. As well as that, the sweeper has a lever handle design that lets you drop the hopper bag without dismounting the tractor or mower.

On top of all that, it has a unique off-set design that lets you cut and sweep your lawn at the same time. You shouldn’t need me to tell you just how much time that is going to save.

If all this wasn’t enough, the sweeper also folds up for storage. Although, it is a massive unit, even when folded, and weighs a massive 92 pounds.

This is clearly more of an industrial option, so if you have a small lawn, you want to maintain for the love of everything holy, do not get this sweeper.

However, if you have acres of land or just a massive garden, maybe give it a look. It’s unlikely you’re going to get better performance out of anything else.

Pros

  • Massive 44-inch sweeping width.
  • 187-gallon hopper capacity.

Cons

  • It’s super heavy.
  • It’s an industrial unit, so not suited towards your average American household.

Agri-Fab 45-0218 26-Inch Push Lawn Sweeper, Black

For my money, this model of hand lawn sweepers is one of the best out there.

It has a 26-inch sweeping width, meaning you’re going to be spending much less time going over patches of your garden, saving you time and energy. Not only that, but I’ve found that it also manages to deal with pines and other larger bits of debris very well.

It has the same industry standard height adjustment, which actually means more in the Agri-Fabs case due to its aforementioned ability to collect larger bits lying around the garden. You can adjust the height to only take care of leaves and grass, or higher it up and let it collect sticks and stones.

Agri-Fab 45-0218 26-Inch Push Lawn Sweeper

One of the things I love the most about this sweeper is just how much stuff it can fit into its hopper. It has over double the capacity of the Earthwise, sitting at a comfortable seven cubic feet, or 52 us gallons.

The sweeper collapses to allow it to be stored, but there is a caveat there. Fully assembled, the model weighs 25 pounds. If you reckon you’re going to struggle with weight, consider giving this one a miss, especially since the bag can get so heavy due to its large capacity. This also means that you aren’t going to be able to hang it up and out of the way so easily.

It has a flat free tire design, which is a nice added bonus, and a 4.5:1 gear ratio.

All in all, the Agri-Fab is one of the best lawn sweepers that I’ve come across in my time. There’s no guarantee that you’re going to get the same level of success with it, granted, but I’d put good money on it.

Pros

  • A large capacity hopper saves you time and energy.
  • Picks up larger garden items like twigs and pinecones.
  • Great sweep width at 26 inches.

Cons

  • It is a particularly heavy model.
  • It can be hard to store it depending on your setup.

Yardwise 23630-YW Sweep It 21-Inch Push Lawn Sweeper

This is fairly compact compared to other models on the market, but because of that, it’s also very light. If you’re getting on in years, you should have no problem operating this particular sweeper, be that using it, emptying it, or assembling it.

It has a 26-gallon hopper size, which sounds fine on paper until you realize just how much you’re going to end up emptying it. This is a particular point of pain, the whole point of a yard sweeper is to make the process of cleaning up the garden painless, and to save your back, and a low capacity hopper sort of defeats that purpose.

Yardwise 23630 21-Inch Push Lawn Sweeper

Like any yard sweeper worth its weight, the Yardwise Sweep It comes with an adjustable dial for the sweeping height. The presence of the dial is nothing to write home about, but it not being there certainly would be.

If you haven’t gathered already, this is a fairly standard cookie-cutter yard sweeper. It isn’t going to break the bank and is reliable enough to be worth getting. In particular, if you think you might struggle with some heavier models out there, then it might be your best bet.

That’s where the Sweep It shines. The lightweight design of the model makes it very easy to maneuver and means that you can hang it in the shed for convenient storage. The assembly only takes about 20 minutes, and again, due to the lightweight design, it is a simple and straight forward process.

Pros

  • The lightweight design makes handling it a treat and storing it is simple.
  • It has an affordable price tag.

Cons

  • It has a low capacity hopper.

Earthwise LSW70021 21-Inch Leaf & Grass Push Lawn Sweeper

I know, I know, isn’t this the same as the other one? Well, it comes from the same American manufacturer, but there are some differences in the models that you should be aware of. The two are pretty similar, and the Earthwise is a bit of a beefier version of its Yardwise brother.

It has the same sweep width as the Yardwise, which is 21 inches. This isn’t the best, although it’s certainly passable. It would be nice to have that extra bump up to 26. It would mean not having to waste time going over parts of the lawn you thought you cleaned.

Earthwise LSW70021 21-Inch Leaf & Grass Push Lawn Sweeper
Earthwise LSW70021 is the best lawn leaf sweeper

It has a simple assembly process that requires no tools, and once put together folds up for easy storage like its brother, which again is going to save back pain sufferers a lot of agony.

It is made of lightweight materials but is actually a bit sturdier than the Yardwise. It has steel scratch-resistant components with powder-coated finishes. It is still super easy to maneuver, and you don’t need to worry about it getting banged up too much.

The adjustable dial is still here, as it should be. Regardless of what height you set the sweeper too, there are a few things that it struggles with in the garden. Wet debris, pinecones, and rocks are all a no go with it. So you may end up with some manual labor on your hands if you have a particularly rocky or rainy garden.

Unfortunately, the Earthwise fails to address the biggest problem that I had with its predecessor, that being the low hopper capacity. It is the exact same, being 26 gallons. This is a massive disappointment for me. While I would still recommend the model, I would advocate for it much more if I didn’t have to spend so much time emptying it out.

Pros

  • It is a revamped version of the Yardwise, with the same emphasis on the lightweight design.

Cons

  • It doesn’t really do enough to justify the upgrade.
  • It has the same low capacity hopper.

How To Choose The Best Lawn Sweepers

There is nothing better than having a clean, debris-free garden for your home. When leaves start piling up in your garden, it’s time to get to work and remove them as soon as possible!

One of the main tools used for this activity is a rake. This tool can turn out to be very time-consuming for you, and can also take a heavy toll on your back, so cleaning up your garden can become into a heavy chore. This is when lawn sweepers come in.

Lawn sweepers are designed to clean the debris in your garden in a faster and easier way. You can clean up your garden in a matter of a few hours – depending on the size of your garden – and then you can use that extra time and energy for any other activity you want to do!

Using a lawn sweeper can be life-changing for you, so it is very important that you choose the right one. Here are some things you can keep in mind while choosing the best lawn sweepers for your garden:

#1 Choosing the Right Type of Lawn Sweeper

There are three kinds of lawn sweepers, you can choose the one that fits you the best:

  • Push Lawn Sweeper – This one is man-powered. It is suitable for smaller lawns with flat and bumpy surfaces.
  • Tow Behind Sweeper – This kind of sweeper is attached to the back of lawn tractors or riding mowers. It works best in larger lawns and flat surfaces.
  • Powered Lawn Sweeper – It is pretty much the same as the push lawn sweeper, with the difference that this one has an engine, so you don’t need to put in much effort since it can do most of the work by itself.

#2 Features to Look Out For

  • Hopper Size: If you have a larger garden, you need a larger hopper for your sweeper. This means you don’t have to empty it so frequently, saving time for you.
  • Type of Brush: The brushes of the lawn sweeper are the ones doing the work, so you need to make sure you get the best one for you. Keep in mind that the number of brushes the sweeper has on its axle is important too; the more it has, the more coverage you can get while sweeping.
  • Height Adjustment: Choosing a lawn sweeper than can change the height of its brushes easily can help you figure out which one is the best for the debris in your garden.
  • Tow Hitch: You need to make sure that your tow behind sweeper is compatible with your tractor/riding mower. Look up a lawn sweeper with a tow hitch that can fit your riding machine.
  • Storage: This one depends on your preferences, but choosing a compact sized lawn sweeper, or one that can collapse in size, helps you store it away easier.

Lawn Sweeper Buying Guide & FAQ

Regardless of what I think, you might decide to do a bit of digging yourself before deciding on what model to buy. That’s fine, but let me help you as much as I can. At the very least, I can offer answers to some of the frequently asked questions that a lot of people have.

I suppose the big one is, are lawn sweepers effective?

The answer is a resounding yes. Granted, the result you see is going to depend on the model you get, but in general, lawn sweepers work very well, at least when it comes to grass and leaves.

How effective it is, though, depends on whether or not you actually need a lawn sweeper. I can’t answer this for you, so take a look at your own situation. Do you have trouble with the gardening, or are you worried about having to bend over and damaging your back? Do you have a large garden that takes ages to maintain? If the answer to either of these is yes, then you might want to consider purchasing one.

Can I use my lawn sweeper while mowing?

If you want to use your sweeper while mowing, you need to look for a towing model, the like Agri-Fab, we mentioned.

Should grass clippings be left on the lawn?

While it’s true that leaving them out allows the grass to reabsorb some nutrients, the benefit is negligible compared to what you would get from properly maintaining your lawn.

When should you use a lawn sweeper?

You don’t need to be busting out your lawn sweeper every day, only when your garden needs it. When the grass is freshly cut, or you’ve had some strong winds, and there are leaves lying around everywhere. Particularly in the summer and fall.

Which is better, a lawn sweeper or a bagger?

There’s an ongoing debate at the minute as to which is better, a lawn sweeper or a bagger. Really, the answer depends on your situation. Baggers are going to collect every little rock and stick that you come across, but maneuvering them is an absolute pain, and it can cost you a bomb. Whereas sweepers are easy to use, compact, and affordable, but don’t do as good of a job.

Can a lawn sweeper pick up acorns or wet leaves?

Then there’s the matter of acorns and wet leaves. Whether your sweeper is going to pick these up or not depends on the model. Generally, no manufacturer is going to promise results when it comes to these two, as it can be hit or miss, but some units are capable of sweeping them up. If you’re not sure, check our reviews above to find the best lawn sweeper for leaves.

Conclusion

There are my two cents when it comes to lawn sweepers, but the question remains of which is actually the best lawn sweeper. Well, from the four I’ve reviewed, I do admit I have a favorite, and that is the hand sweeper Agri-Fab unit.

The lawn sweeper has a 26-inch sweeping width, which is a cut above the market average. On top of that, it has a seven cubic foot hopper size, which is perfect for people like me who don’t want to waste time walking back and forth, emptying out bags of leaves.

It’s heavier compared to the Yardwise and Earthwise models, but its specs are just so much better than those two that it’s hard to ignore. That’s just my opinion, though. If yours differs, that’s completely fine. So long as it gets the job done, any lawn sweeper is worth using.
