How to Dry Ginger
Gingerbread men, exotic recipes and spicy herbal tea blends.
What do they have in common?
Ginger!
Did you know you can dry ginger at home? Yep, it’s easy.
Whether you’ve grown your own or bought it at the store you can dry and make your own ginger powder.

You don’t need any special equipment, although a dehydrator makes the job a breeze.
Here’s how to do it:
Rinse ginger and peel off any blemished or dirty ginger skin.

Slice ginger. 1/4 ” thin slices -or slightly thinner- seem to dry fairly quickly and evenly.

Place slices on dehydrator trays or in the oven (on the lowest possible setting) and dehydrate until pieces are dry and crisp.
This may take up to 6-8 hours depending on your settings and the thickness of your ginger slices.

Once the ginger is dry and cool you can powder the slices using a mortar and pestle, coffee mill, or a food processor.
Store powdered ginger in jars away from heat and light. I like to tuck some away in the freezer, too.

As with all dried herbs, always be sure that your finished product is completely dry before storing to prevent mold from growing!
